Club dive in to help Sean
Over the past year the Club has been holding various
fundraising events in an effort to support Club member Sean Downey
in his efforts to swim for Great Britain in the 2008 Olympics in China.
Mick Murphy (Steward) held a golf day, Maureen
Bowler organised a Charity Night and Ian Freeman badgered everyone
to donate prizes with great success! The result was an outstanding £1,800
which will help Sean with his training costs- which according to parents
Jan and Eddie Downey are considerable. Included in that
amount was a superb £500 donation from a member who wished to remain
anonymous!

Pictured above is Malcolm Bunker, CGSSC Vice-Chairman
presenting Sean with a cheque for £1,800 together with
Mr David Harris, Managing Director of Thameside Construction Ltd
who weighed in with a hefty cheque for £2,500 for the swimmer.

Sean (above left) poses with some of the people
who organised the fundraising events, Mick Murphy, Steward, Maureen
Bowler, Entertainments, Secretary and Malcolm Bunker, Vice
Chairman. The Cups and shields on the table are just a few of the trophies
earned the hard way by this talented swimmer.
The trophies were won by Sean over two consecutive
weekends in March 2004 when he broke county records for every trophy!
He now goes to Manchester next month (March) when he aims to qualify for
the European Championships. We wish him the best of luck!
Sean also holds the Club record for being the
youngster player to score for the first team on Saturdays. He also still
turns out for our Saturday and Sunday teams and puts in guest appearances
for the U18 Midweek League team.
If anyone else would like to help Sean in his efforts
please contact the Club Secretary.
