Alan Mullery - CG's Guest Speaker
19 November, 2004

Alan Mullery (pictured above with Reg Freeman, Trustee,
Maureen Bowler, Event Organiser and Ian Freeman, Secretary)
was the guest speaker at this year's Crawley Green Annual Sporting
Dinner - and not surprisingly it once again proved an outstanding
success. The former England international was a member of 1966 World Cup
winning squad and won a regular midfield place for the 1970 World Cup
in Mexico.
His nomination for the most talented player he ever played with was
Pele, whom, according to Alan had every skill needed to be the
world's best player.
Like Nobby Stiles last year, he also spoke of his admiration for England
captain Bobby Moore - a theme which seems all our previous speakers
have endorsed.
Alan did us the honour of coming to our own Clubhouse before
going on to the venue for the dinner.

Maureen Bowler (along with Chairman Tony Talbot,
the event organisers) introduced Alan to the rest of the evening's
assistants - Malcolm Bunker (Vice-Chairman) and Paul Stump
(our resident compere and Jimmy Greaves lookalike).

while superb comedian Mick Pugh and Paul Stump look on.
Later in the evening it was confirmed that "sixties follower of fashion
icon" Stumpy, was actually wearing two odd shoes. There is hope for
the rest of us!
The winner of a Tottenham Hotpsur football shirt - signed by goalscoring
legend Jimmy Greaves and guest Alan Mullery, was Club member
Terry Stevenson who has generously agreed to donate it to the Club.
The Club will be pleased to get it framed, with an acknowledgement to
the Terry, and it will be placed in a significant position within
the Club (possibly in Cockle's Corner).
Alan is due to enter hospital for a hip replacement operationat
the end of the month and the Club wishes him all the best for this.

Jim Fox and Ted Farr give Alan advice on how
football should be played.

Malcolm Bunker and Paul Stump used their persuasive skills
to auction a signed Tottenham Hotspur football and a signed Chelsea football.
Both balls sold for £200. Thanks to David Felmingham for
providing the Tottenham football.
Proceeds from tonight's event will help pay the pitch costs for all
our 30 football teams for the season. A donation will also be made to
a local charity and Sean Downey, our Olympic swimming aspirant
will benefit from a donation to help with his training costs.
